Thoughts on VR, AR and XR

my second semester on the theory of VR was a little weird to me because in my bachelor's I made a small VR prototype with a friend of mine. Back then we just straight jumped into coding, no discussion not a second thought of what we were jumping into. We just jumped because it looked really cool.

In class we actually started having a conversation of finding the origins of VR, the practicality, the approach to design and the use of VR outside games. Whenever I though VR, I thought it would be fun to immerse myself into it for games. Last week I check out this app The first look: Artist’s VR. It is an app developed as a virtual art museum. This concept is pretty good and then it got me thinking, how people would say computer game are just there for enjoyment but then games evolved to be more like have simulations that different fields use. Games are used as educational tools. Now thinking in these lines I see VR in a broader perspective.

I feel we technically have access to Virtual Reality to go as far as we want but we are still exploring new forms of design and purpose for VR, to discover the edges and limits of VR, to think outside the box to achieve that level of design that maximizes the use of VR.

When I think of Virtual worlds one of the first things that come to mind is an anime music video.

Porter Robinson & Madeon — Shelter (Official Video) (Short Film with A-1 Pictures & Crunchyroll)

The video shows how this little girl has a small tab and this gives her control over the world around her. Making her the god of this virtual environment. She constantly keeps working on the environment to where she makes her environment feel extremely realistic. Running through her creativity her past memories surfaces. Though she feels sad because of this virtual environment she can relive those memories of her dad.

This video makes you think if VR is designed in the right way how far can me push virtual experiences.

The other technological marvel that I saw in recent years is the virtual band KDA by League of Legends take centre stage for the 2018 finals World championship opening.

And somehow the following year they took it a step above with the other virtual band True Damage.

To see the power of AR where our favourite game characters walk among us in our world is as amazing as it is insane.

The behind the scenes was just equally amazing.

Looking at the technology at hand as a game designer I feel that I can submerge people into worlds I imagen and see how they react to situations I put them in. The only thing I want to do is design my games in such a manner that is maximizes the use of VR.
